As it just so happens, I was recently reading a self-insert fanfic. It’s an obscure little work called The Divine Comedy, by a fellow named Dante Alighieri. Maybe you’ve heard of it?
In all seriousness, there’s a lot of self-insert in published fiction, but it resides under code names like “semi-autobiographical.” A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, for example, is a semi-autobiographical rendition of Betty Smith’s own childhood, as is The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian for author Sherman Alexie. Both are splendidly done and richly enjoyable.
If you’re referring to fanfiction – of which I also read quite a bit – self-insert fanfic is considered to have a lot of psychological benefits, and is a great means of practice. I haven’t read or written any self-insert fanfiction myself, but I absolutely support people who do.

I was high off my ass last night and had this dream where I was in this dense ass forest and sitting there was a tall woman. She was so tall I couldn’t see her face but she was wearing gold and I was like “uh...hi?” And she said “I made you, do you know that?” And I nodded and she was like “I hear your thoughts.
